Homelessness: NIMBYism
Posted: 11 Feb 2013 07:02 AM PST
NIMBY
is the abbreviation of the phrase, “Not In My BackYard.” It is a term used to
describe the negative emotional reaction that some of us experience when we
fear that other people, who belong in a group other than the group to which we
align ourselves, may live near or among us. NIMBYism is the term used as a noun
as in the sentence, “Group homes for people with severe mental challenges are
not welcome in this neighborhood because of the NIMBYism of its residents.” The
focus of NIMBYism can be any race, economic class or any basis upon which
similarly situated people can be distinguished from other groups. The online
Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that the first known use of this term was in
1980. However, the negative emotional response to people unlike ourselves
living in our neighborhoods developed long before its use in everyday parlance.

COORDINATION TO HELP THE HOMELESS
Homeless Food Servers
Coordinating
A former top cop in San
Diego's police department recently criticized those who hand out food to the
homeless. He said they might have good hearts but often they're not helping
people help themselves.
Now, a group of those who work to provide food to the homeless are trying to coordinate their efforts better.
* We have two new reader commentaries on homelessness. Reader Connie Lambert says we've all been desensitized to the homeless (to which some commenters said we're too sensitive). And reader Doris Payne shared her story about volunteering.

Gong Hey Fat Choy
To
those who celebrate the Lunar New Year,
here's
wishing you "Gong Xi Fa Cai" as you prepare for the grand
celebration.
The
most common Chinese ways of saying Happy New Year are Gong Xi Fa Cai (Mandarin)
and Gong Hey Fat Choy (Cantonese). Even though the pronunciations are a little
different, both are written the same way.
TANGERINE IS "GOLD"
During this season, the Chinese people visit family and friends, bringing with them tangerines as gifts.

We associate tangerines with "gold", thus
it's like bringing prosperity to the people we visit.
Tangerines are generally sold 2-dozen to a carton, and most traditional Chinese households will stock-up with at least 2-3 cartons.

It's the same at my home and I'll be having tangerines
for the next week or two!
