Small shops speak up against Target Express store in South Park

SAN DIEGO - A new Target store is about to open in the South Park neighborhood, but this location will not be selling some common items. "They have a small selection of clothing," said Jenna Gumto, who works at the store So Childish. "[It's] not going to carry toys."

Destination San Diego - North/South Park



Tune in to this edition of Destination San Diego to learn more about two of Balboa Park’s neighbors – North Park and South Park. SAN DIEGO - A man was arrested after he drove his car onto a pedestrian walkway in North Park and got stuck early Monday morning. Sometime before 2 a.m., the Nissan Altima drove onto the pedestrian bridge at University Avenue and Florida Street, scraped between both sides before getting wedged up against a pole.

'Stunning' effort by neighbors helps nab bike thief
SAN DIEGO - A man suspected in dozens of bike thefts in the past week is behind bars, after a remarkable neighborhood effort to track him down. Late Saturday night in South Park, a loud noise sent Sue Askew running out of her house on Elm Street.

Woman pistol-whipped during North Park robbery
SAN DIEGO - A woman was recovering after being pistol-whipped during one of two overnight robberies in North Park, police said. The first occurred on the 3900 block of Iowa Street at 11:05 p.m. A man was walking down the street when he was mugged by two suspects with a handgun.

Bike-sharing off to bumpy start
San Diego's first experiment with the worldwide trend of bike-sharing has been a bumpy ride so far. Use of the city's large network of rental stations has been modest since they began operating in January, and community leaders complain the company running the network is cherry-picking lucrative locations instead of focusing on sites that would get commuters out of their cars.

Legal Challenge to Jacobs Plan for Balboa Park Isn't Over
A little more than two years after an ambitious, controversial plan for Balboa Park was rejected by a San Diego Superior Court judge, the so-called Jacobs plan is back on the table - barely. A few months have passed since a state appellate court overturned Superior Court Judge Timothy Taylor's ruling, clearing the way for San Diego to reconsider the project.

What to do about the homeless in San Diego?
Everybody seems to be concerned about dealing with the homeless in San Diego, and two community groups in the Uptown area recently conducted public meetings to debate the hot-button issue. Meanwhile, San Diego Uptown News followed up with the Hillcrest Business Association to find out how its pilot program with the Alpha Project is working out.

Thieves steal from North Park home as homeowner sleeps
SAN DIEGO - A homeowner in North Park is shaken after thieves broke into his home while he was asleep. The home invasion happened Thursday morning in the 4600 block of Texas Street. Carlo Toribio says he hasn't gotten much sleep since the incident.

3 fires break out in abandoned North Park building
SAN DIEGO - Three separate fires broke out inside an abandoned North Park building late Sunday night. The fires broke out before 11:45 p.m. at a two-story building at the intersection of Texas Street and Howard Avenue. Someone at a McDonald's across the street noticed smoke coming from the building and called 911.
